Joshua Qagmuk Ahsoak is an Inupiaq artist from the village of Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska. Josh lives and works in Anchorage, Alaska. His work includes fine art, mid-century modern furniture, jewelry, and jewelry boxes.
Josh uses different materials in his work, including wood, casting resin, walrus ivory, bowhead whale baleen and dried flowers.
Josh and other Inupiaq hunters harvest arctic animals, including marine mammals, as part of the traditional and subsistence hunts in rural Alaska. Per Inupiaq hunting traditions, hunters and artists use as much of the animal as possible in order to honor the sacrifice the animal is making on behalf of the community.
Josh blends traditional Inupiaq materials with modern design in his projects, including: fine art and mid-century modern furniture incorporating bowhead whale baleen cast in resin; walrus ivory handled jewelry boxes; bowhead whale baleen, dried flowers, and resin earrings; and walrus ivory, fossilized walrus ivory, and resin jewelry.
